What are Seagrass?
Straws, also called seagrass, are one kind of perennial grass of marshy meadows growing in paddy fields. Straws, roughly 1.4 to 2.0 meters high, have erect plants and the plants, after dried, can be woven into a great variety of straw products. The Han period¡¯s most famous historian, Sima Qian ( 145-87 B.C.) provides a detailed chronicle in his masterpiece, Shiji ( Historical Records), that straw mattings had widely been used for praying and in households prior to Han period: ¡°straws are made for mattings,¡± and straws ¡°are clean and soft; being clean for praying for God, being soft for usage for human health.¡± The history of the use of straws can be traced back 4,000 years !!! The growth and planting of straws need no fertilizer or any pesticide. After manual harvesting and being dried under sunshine, and after being flattened, straws are woven into straw bags, straw mattings, straw hats and straw baskets, etc.
